A Beginners Guide to Spa Etiquette

1. Making an appointment

Okay, we know you are not an idiot and making an appointment might seem like an easy task but we do have some simple advice – don’t rush it.  Take your time to peruse The Spa’s menu (or a complete listing of The Spa’s offerings can be found at by clicking on this downloadable Guide or talk to the staff – ask them what each treatment is if you’re unsure.  Don’t be afraid to ask dumb questions – there is nothing you can ask which hasn’t been asked before.

2. What to wear and bring

Dress comfy…this is not a day for elaborate hair-dos, stilettos and tight, tailored clothes.  It’s about you relaxing…so feel free to bowl up in your trackpants, with your hair out and no make-up on.  This is Hanmer Springs…you will fit right in.  You might like to bring along a hairbrush, a change of clothes and some toiletries in case you are going out afterwards – or just bring your togs and a towel and head straight for the pools!

3. Arriving on the day

Don’t rush, arrive early – sounds like a contradiction in terms but what we are saying is don’t arrive at the last minute, leap into your fluffy robe and walk into the treatment room carrying your slippers with an ‘I’m ready, let’s get on with it’ mentality.  The whole spa experience is about taking time out for yourself, so aim to arrive around fifteen minutes before your appointment.  Being relaxed will ensure you get the most out of your treatment.

4. Clothing during the treatment

You will be provided with some designer disposable underwear (okay, it’s not designer but it…um…err…offers suitable coverage), and a soft, fluffy robe with complimentary slippers before your treatment.  During the treatment, you wear the disposable underwear only…do not fret or be embarrassed – your therapist is a professional.

5. During the treatment

Relax and enjoy.  We mean this…do not feel obliged to talk to the therapist about the weather outside or how her day is going.  Forget about the kids, your partner or dinner - let your mind roam.  Try and work out what picture your masseur is drawing on your body or focus on the scent of any product being used…think only of your treatment and how incredible it feels to be the centre of such wonderful attention.

6. Afterwards

Again…chill.  Don’t leap up from the table and shout a quick ‘thanks’ on your way out.  Your therapist will help you up, offer you a glass of water and help you put your robe back on.  Then head to The Spa’s relaxation room and take time to rest and reflect while enjoying a refreshing tea or juice, before you get dressed and skip out the door feeling like a million dollars!
